Four Steps to a Better Job Interview

There are four key steps you can take before your next job interview. Following these steps will increase your chances of getting the best job for you.

1. Think about yourself, analyze yourself, and reflect on the following categories: your values, priorities, strengths, weaknesses, and interests.

Your values can include an interest in improving specific skills or working on a particular problem. When you identify your values, start thinking about priorities: which values are more important than the other. Then you can examine your weaknesses. It is necessary to present your weaknesses as challenges, but not as negative qualities. If you have a problem in delegating work to your team members, it would be good to mention that you know about this issue and that you have developed an open communication strategy to meet this personal challenge.

Make a list in each category, for example:

Values:
1)
2)
3)

Priorities:
1)
2)
3)

Strengths:
1)
2)
3)

Weaknesses: (click here for some ideas)

Interests:

2)
3)

The above five categories (values, priorities, strengths, weaknesses and interests) will naturally develop your questions for your interviewer. Your questions will demonstrate your knowledge of the company, will show that you are seriously interested in the position and that you understand how you could fit in the enterprise.

Make a list of the essential items about yourself you want to cover in an interview. An interview can be very stressful, so you should not expect that you will be able to remember all the important things that you want to mention.

2. Know the company and understand the job requirements.

Study company website. Check all links. You must remember the company motto, mission, vision, history, accomplishments, weaknesses or challenges, current projects, plans, and long-term goals. Do some online research and find their competitors. Study thoroughly the job description. Make sure you understood all job requirements. Analyze your strengths and weaknesses that are related to the job requirements. Try to match your skills to the job requirements. Prepare to give examples that illustrate your skills. Instead of telling that you are creative, you should explain how you are creative, i.e. give examples of your creativity. Instead of telling that you are honest, tell how you are honest, i.e. give an example that shows you did something and others appreciated very much.

3. Practice, practice, practice. There is an old saying, 'Practice makes perfect.'

Study typical job interview questions. Write clear and concise answers. However, regardless of how much you practice, it is important not only to memorize answers but also to speak expressively, and not like a robot.

4. Make a good impression.

Arrive at least ten or fifteen minutes earlier. Choose your clothes, makeup, and perfume wisely. Greet everyone with a smile. To feel confident, you need to know how to dress, how to act, and what to avoid at an interview. Study The Ultimate Interview Tips and Techniques Guide.
